How Not To Be Overwhelmed By Beauty

beauty products, makeup, skincare, hair care, foundation, eye shadow, charlotte tilbury, inkia, vichy, bourgeois, john frieda, NARS

With so many products on the market nowadays, how do you know where to start? How do you know which serum is right for you? Which Foundation matches your skin type? Or even who to listen to when it comes to reviews?

The beauty market has become so saturated that if you're coming in from an outside angle, then I can see how it can be completely overwhelming. I mean, it can be for me to and I'm a beauty obsessive, beauty blogger and I work in beauty too. So don't worry if you ever feel like this... We ALL do.

I mean, who can really tell the brightening, clarifying, softening, 'I-will-work-miracle' creams from each other. I honestly don't think it's down to this. Companies obviously say that their product will do xyz because at the end of the day, their end goal is to sell it to you and whether or not it will have the effect on you that it says it will is a different story.

Beauty is so subjective, what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa. It's all a bit trial and error unfortunately. For someone like me however, that eats, sleeps and breathes beauty - well that's just the fun of it. But perhaps for someone that finds it more of a must-do then I can imagine it can be a little tedious and I honestly don't blame people that find a product and stick to it for years. I totally understand that, and although I don't and won't ever do that in all areas of my beauty regime, there are some areas that I just can't see changing anytime soon - Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, I'm looking at you.

So if you're looking at all of these products and are wondering where to start. I have one piece of advice for you and that's not to get sucked in and keep it simple. If you've got this far without all of the serums, primers, oils and every other beauty product under the sun, then I think you can wait a little while before you start adding them into your beauty routine. For skincare think about starting with a cleanser, toner and moisturiser with perhaps a scrub for a couple of times a week and then for makeup I'd keep it really simple too. You will know what you feel like you need. If you feel like your complexion needs in enhancing then a foundation and concealer will be your best friend. Perhaps pick up a do-it-all eyeshadow palette (my favourites are of course the Urban Decay Naked Palettes) and a kohl liner, mascara and brow pencil. Swatch a few lip products, pick your favourites. Maybe a blush. But keep it super simple and don't feel like you've got to own 50 red lipsticks just because the bloggers you follow might. It really is unnecessary, and I fully well know my beauty collection is more than a little out of hand.

The drugstore and on the high street has so many great picks nowadays that you don't need to spend a bomb to find something that's good. Think about what type of skin you have and research into what could work for you. Go in store, have a swatch and you'll be able to work out what you like. If you do want to make an investment into some key pieces however, I would recommend putting that budget into your skincare. I say this all the time, so forgive me if you've heard me say it already but you have to work from the base upwards. If your not looking after your skin and you're having a bad time with it then no £50 foundation will make it look any better. Invest in skincare that will work for you, don't just buy it because so and so said it on their YouTube channel. They may well have a very different skin type to you and research will help you make sure you don't waste your money on something that just isn't right.

So I'm just going to end this post by reiterating the fact that the only thing I can recommend to help not feeling overwhelmed with beauty is by just keeping it simple, your skin will thank you for it in the long run too...

  1. Really enjoyed reading this! Totally agree with you that you can find some amazing gems in the drugstore and they'll only cost quarter the price than the high street ones. x

  2. I don't own much makeup/beauty products for this very reason. We'd all be so skint if we bought every wounder product on the market. =^-^=

  3. I loved this post! I feel my beauty collection has gotten rather out of hand & I often feel I'm drowning in products! I like your ethos of keep it simple. I've recently started pulling products out of my collection each month to reduce the overwhelming feeling that detracts from the enjoyment of using makeup. I've also started project panning to work through all my red lipsticks & other dupes! Xx

  4. I totally agree with you. I never think anyone should just jump headfirst into this because its very expensive and its pointless. I have bought so many things I just don't use and couldn't possible because I only have one face! But some things I absolutely cherish and would never have discovered without my beauty obsession!
